12 vessels to be delivered over 20 months for India’s waterway infrastructure, marking a key expansion for the company

Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Ltd. (KMEW) has secured a major ₹80.69 crore work order from the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI). The contract involves the design, construction, and delivery of six Work Boats and six Accommodation Boats, to be used for the National Waterway-1 project along the Ganga River. The execution period is 20 months.
This deal marks KMEW’s first third-party commercial shipbuilding contract, shifting the company beyond its in-house shipbuilding for government charters. Until now, KMEW primarily built vessels for its own operations. This is the company’s first direct “business-to-government” (B2G) shipbuilding project, setting the stage for future growth in this space.
The order represents a strategic milestone, as it marks KMEW’s formal entry into India’s commercial shipbuilding sector. It also supports the recent acquisition of a shipyard, which will now be put to productive use with consistent work. The company aims to become a key player in building dredgers and support vessels under the Make in India initiative.
KMEW has evolved from a ship repair business into a full-service marine engineering company, offering dredging, vessel maintenance, and hydrographic surveys. This order enhances its credentials, diversifies revenue streams, and aligns with the Indian government’s push for better inland waterway infrastructure.
Knowledge Marine & Engineering Works Ltd. (KMEWL) is engaged in dredging, operating, and maintaining marine vessels and infrastructure in India and Myanmar. Its fleet includes various boats and dredgers used for port and waterway services.
